The Green Cage
Richmond, Melbourne
Project: ResidentialThe site is conceived as a lush, green landscape, with an abundance of trees set amongst softly undulating grassland. Within this natural setting, three distinct built elements are carefully positioned: the Garage, anchored to the roadside; the House, centrally placed within the site; and a subterranean Studio, embedded within the landscape.
Each element responds to its particular relationship with the land, allowing the architecture and landscape to exist in quiet dialogue. The Garage establishes a defined edge to the street, while the House occupies the heart of the site, surrounded by greenery and enjoying an intimate connection with the garden. The underground Studio is discreetly absorbed into the contours of the land, its presence deliberately understated.
Together, the buildings form a considered composition within a continuous green landscape, where trees, gentle changes in level and open grassland create a sense of enclosure, privacy and discovery. The intention is for the landscape to remain the dominant experience, with the architecture appearing as a series of carefully placed interventions within it.
