Project: ResidentialThe proposal reimagines the existing house through a considered interplay of preservation and transformation. The original shell is retained, lifted and repositioned upon a new concrete base, establishing a dialogue between the familiar form of the existing dwelling and the contemporary architecture introduced beneath it.
Within this new concrete foundation, a series of solid interior walls and translucent glass-brick dividers establish a sequence of spaces defined by contrasts in material, light and enclosure. Glass-brick external walls filter daylight into the interior, offering privacy while creating an ever-changing play of light, shadow and texture. The solidity of the concrete is balanced by the luminosity of the glass, giving the new spaces a distinct architectural identity while maintaining a connection to the original house above.
A new lower ground level extends the dwelling into the landscape, establishing a direct connection to a swimming pool sunken into the earth. Conceived as an intimate, sheltered retreat, the pool becomes an integral part of the architecture rather than a separate outdoor element.
A bold RED triangular form marks this new intervention, creating a striking geometric counterpoint to the existing house. Its sloping roof is extensively glazed, drawing natural light deep into the pool enclosure and opening views towards the sky. Integrated actuated louvres provide control over ventilation, sunlight and the internal environment, allowing the space to respond to changing weather and seasonal conditions.
The relationship between the elevated existing house and the sunken pool creates a rich spatial experience, moving between the familiar domestic spaces above and the more elemental, grounded environment below. Concrete, glass brick, transparent glazing and the singular red form establish a deliberate architectural language in which old and new remain individually legible yet intimately connected.
The project explores the potential of retaining and reinventing an existing dwelling, using its familiar silhouette as the starting point for an entirely new experience of living. Through the manipulation of ground levels, natural light, materiality and geometric form, the architecture creates a series of unexpected spaces that celebrate both the history of the house and the possibilities of its transformation.
