Bird Song House

Kerikeri, Northland, NZ

Project: Residential

Nestled within a clearing in the native bush, atop a gently rolling hill, the house sits quietly within the landscape, opening itself to the surrounding greenery and the expansive natural environment beyond. Its placement celebrates the simplicity of the site, allowing the architecture to become part of the clearing rather than imposing itself upon it.

The house embraces the changing light, the movement of the trees and the gentle breezes that drift across the hill, carrying the scent of honeydew and the sound of birdsong. Openings frame intimate views into the surrounding bush, while sheltered outdoor spaces encourage an effortless connection between inside and out.

The architecture seeks to capture the tranquillity of this elevated setting, creating a place of retreat where the rhythms of nature become part of everyday life. A quiet interplay of shelter and openness, sunlight and shadow, enclosure and outlook establishes a dwelling that feels deeply connected to its surroundings.

Here, the experience of living is shaped as much by the landscape as by the architecture itself — a place to pause, breathe and enjoy the simple pleasures of being immersed in nature.
