Project: Education

V Block was a particularly enjoyable project from my time as Associate Director at Studio B Architects. The design explored geometry as a means of connecting the building to the school's AFL sports ground, taking cues from the geometry of the playing field to inform the building's form and its place within the wider campus.

The intention was to do more than design an individual school building. V Block was part of a broader exercise in establishing a stronger masterplan, using the relationship between building, sports ground and campus to bring greater order and identity to the school.

I led the design and technical documentation, carrying the underlying geometry through into the detailed drawings required to realise the project. I enjoyed the challenge of taking a relatively simple idea and allowing it to inform both the architectural expression of the building and its relationship to the school around it. It was a good example of how a clear design idea, when followed through carefully, can contribute to something larger than the building itself.
